Valokeilassa.fi brings inspiration and ideas for nature photographers

The "Valokeilassa" website has been developed for two purposes: to showcase unique visual art for those interested in the wonders of nature and to provide inspiration and ideas for nature photographers.
A glittering, mirror-calm sea, with bright blue ice floes starting to drift as the wind picks up—not just yet, now it's serene. The shore also seems quiet, but the rubber boat stays a safe distance away—out of the emptiness, a majestic polar bear might appear. A seal observes the boat from a distance it considers safe. Walruses, with their massive tusks, are not as particular about keeping a safe distance. Northern fulmars fly very close, as does the ivory gull, whose encounter may be one of the highlights of the trip for someone. A surfacing blue whale leaves everyone breathless.
The experienced moments are shared by the photography group—but what about the shots captured from those moments? When photographers who shared a common journey compare their experiences and images afterward, they are incredibly different. Each photo carries the individual touch of its captor.
Authentic and Unique Encounters
When dedicated photographers meet, even the most experienced one can gain new perspectives. There is always something new to learn about photography—a lifetime is not enough to master every style and technique or to capture every interesting subject.
Life experiences, emotions, and memories shape not only the perspective but also the story behind the image. This is how photos become unique pieces of art that can be enjoyed by a much broader audience than just photographers. Alongside artificial intelligence, genuine experiences are needed so that life does not shrink to a synthetic world the size of a palm.
Behind the Picture and the Camera
Valokeilassa.fi showcases the people behind the images, with Risto Raunio being the first for many reasons. His effort and dedication are evident in his unique collections of images, which take the viewer to exceptional landscapes and regions that few have the opportunity to visit. Photographing the Antarctic and Arctic nature is demanding work. Behind a magnificent work of art are countless hours of preparation and waiting, failures, and moments that make a photographer question: is this worthwhile? Risto is also a photographer who does not compromise on quality. Instead of special techniques, he shoots traditionally and seeks an individual approach to his images through a unique environment, thoughtful perspective, and impactful lighting. The resulting work has been internationally acclaimed time and again. Risto's photos also convey an important message—the fragile nature cannot withstand the way humans treat it. Much more significant actions need to be taken to address climate change. Powerful photographic works make an impact. Publishing them and telling the stories behind them is an important part of the work against climate change.
