Was the list complete by Christmas? After 14 years, had all 19 species of penguins been documented? Yes, indeed – and under highly favorable circumstances! Under the starlit sky, the landing of Australian little penguins on New Zealand’s South Island, at the Otago Peninsula, was captured on film, where a small population of this species nests.

Photographer Risto Raunio, known for capturing the Arctic and Antarctic regions, has extensively photographed various penguin species alongside his many exotic nature trips. Recently, he realized he had photographed nearly all penguin species! At first, this was neither a goal nor even a dream, but somehow, it happened.

Risto Raunio won silver in the Wildlife category of the Finnish Photo Awards 2024 photography competition. The final judging took place in early October in Tampere, where Raunio’s image "Rolling Over" secured second place in the Wildlife category. The competition was exceptionally fierce this year, with four images scoring over 90 points. In the Landscape category, Raunio’s photograph "Snow Petrel and Iceberg" achieved fifth place.
