Erect-crested penguin breeds only on deserted islands east of New Zealand, such as Antipodes and Bounty Islands. In terms of diving skills, the bird is one of the best of the penguins. It can dive to depths of up to 100 metres in search of food. The bird is strictly protected and its uninhabited home islands are closed. The bird is Endangered and its population is in decline. There are around 68,000 breeding pairs.
